A diode is a two-terminal electronic component with asymmetric conductance, it has low (ideally zero) resistance to current flow in one direction and high (ideally infinite) resistance in the other. If the P side is more negative than the N side, the depletion layer increases in thickness and permits no current to pass through it. and so it acts as a voltage-operated switch.

When an input signal passes through the transistor, across the boundary between the cut-in region and active region, or across the boundary between the active region and saturation region, a portion of the input signal waveform will be clipped off.
