Where To Install Smoke Detector In Bedroom With Ceiling fan?

Are you looking to buy a new smoke detector for your home? It is an amazing idea. The presence of a smoke detector in your bedroom protects you and your family from fire hazards. However, it is difficult to install it, If there is a ceiling fan installed in the bedroom and that might interfere with the smoke detector.

Where to install a smoke detector in the bedroom with a ceiling fan?

Always try to install the sensor away from the ceiling fan, precisely at least 3 feet away from the tips of the blades of the fan. NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends installing at least one detector on the ceiling. If the detector is installed higher on the walls or the ceiling, you will get a more accurate signal from the detector.

There are situations where NFPA recommends installing more than one detector per room if you install the detectors on the walls instead of the ceiling.

Will a Fan Interfere with the Performance of the Smoke Detector?

According to the experiments carried out by NFPA regarding the impact of a ceiling fan on the smoke detecting sensor, There is less chance of interference of the fan on the smoke sensor if it is placed at least 3 feet away from the tips of the fan blades. However, there might be a slight delay in detection if the fan is moving at a very high speed.

Why is it Important to Install a Smoke Detecting Sensor in My Bedroom?

According to FEMA ( Federal Emergency Management Agency ), more than 3600 American people lost their lives, more than 15000 people were injured and the property of more than 25 billion dollars was lost in the fires in 2018.

Over the last few decades, the number of incidents of fire hazards has decreased. This is possible because of engineers and technologies used in fireproof materials, better construction of buildings, and better early warning systems like smoke detectors and heat alarms. It does not matter how good these systems are, they can’t be 100% accurate. Fires are still going to take place. That is the purpose of installing smoke detectors.

What kind of Smoke Detectors are available?

There are 2 types of smoke detectors i.e.

Photoelectric smoke detector

It is designed to measure smoke as it circulates through a large area. In the rooms with high ceilings, it is sensitive to even the lowest level of smoke. Their working depends on the light beam. In normal conditions, the light beam in the sensor chamber is not broken. Once smoke enters the chamber, the light beam is broken so the sensor does not receive the light beam and the alarm sounds.

Ionization smoke detector

This detector has two plates, the current is generated between the plates by a constant flow of the charged ions. There is a break in the flow once smoke enters the chamber and the alarm turns ON.

Final Words

Hopefully, the above information about smoke detectors is helpful to you. So follow the guidelines and save your family and properties from the fire by installing smile detectors at the proper place.
