A sudden increase in voltage above the rated value is called a power surge. It can damage the appliances connected to the load terminal. Reasons for power surges are changes in the power grid, lightning strikes, voltage swell, and large voltage fluctuation due to the use of highly rated equipment at home.

When an electric current exceeds its range of operation and passes through the device, there is overheating in the device. Due to this arcing and overheating, the device connected is destroyed with electrical wiring.

Relation between a power outage and power surge

A power outage occurs due to failure of the power grid, lightning strike, load shedding, or any other faults in the system. When the power is restored after the event of an outage, there is a sudden increase in current. This jump in current above the required level creates a power surge. The power surge then damages the appliances connected to the load side if they are not disconnected. It means a power outage is a reason for the power surge.
