Star Delta Conversion & Delta Star Conversion

In this article, we will see Star Delta Conversion and Delta Star Conversion. This conversion is widely used in the analysis of 3-phase electric power circuits. In simple words, it is used for the simplification of an electrical circuit in order to easily analyse the circuit.

Star Delta Conversion

In this section, we will see how to convert star (Y) configuration into delta (Δ) configuration. This transformation permits three resistors which make a Y configuration to be replaced by three in a Δ configuration. Consider figure 1.

Fig. 1 (a) delta connection (b) star connection

The equivalent delta resistance between any two terminals is given by the sum of star resistances between those terminals plus the product of these two-star resistances divide by the remaining third-star resistances.

Delta Star Conversion

In this section, we will see how to convert delta (Δ) configuration into star (Y) configuration. This transformation permits three resistors which make a Δ configuration to be replaced by three in a Y configuration.  Consider figure 2.

Fig. 2 (a) delta connection (b) star connection

The resistance of each arm of the star is given by the product of the resistance of the two delta sides that meet at its end divided by the sum of the three delta resistances.

To find R1 of star connection from delta connection, see what resistances are connected at node 1. So R1 is equal to the product of resistances connected at node 1 divided by the sum of three resistances in delta connection.

R2 is equal to the product of resistances connected at node 2 divided by the sum of three resistances in delta connection.

R3 is equal to the product of resistances connected at node 3 divided by the sum of three resistances in delta connection.
